White Black

This painting sold at auction for $903, 500 at Christie's. You can scroll down this site to see how they describe the work. Not to keep you in suspense, I'll quote a little of it here: "Central to Kelly's work and especially evident in White Black is a vigorous self-constraint. He allows himself a limited palette and two geometric shapes to evoke this monumental composition of striking proportion, activated by the tension between two planes."

This tension didn't come cheap. I'm going to dispute their claim, however, and argue that I don't see a limited palette and vigorous self-constraint. I see an object that anyone could make, that most people find uninteresting. I see a dirth of ideas.

We are not supposed to harbor such philistinian thoughts. But there you go. I've said it. I have defied the art elite.
